Dr. Coles’ research uses economic and finance tools to examine strategic choices of firms. Specifically, her work has focused on the areas of vertical integration and corporate governance. She has examined both proprietary and non-profit firms. Her work has appeared in The Journal of Management, The Journal of Corporate Finance, and The Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization. She has expertise in the health care field, but has also examined firms in a broad set of industry contexts.
Professor Coles has worked with a number of organizations ranging from small family-owned businesses to large manufacturing organizations. Her experience extends to every organizational level. She was co-director of the Leadership Assessment Institute at the American Graduate School of International Management, where she also taught strategy courses in the Master of International Management Program. Her teaching interests have focused primarily on graduate and undergraduate courses in Strategic Management, but she has also taught courses in Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management.
Professor Coles had been involved with a number of community organizations. She is the mother of three daughters, Jennifer (23), Sasha (16) and Lauren (13). Her children have attended public, private and charter schools in three states. Her husband is the Chair of the Department of Finance in the W.P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University, Tempe Campus.
